Genesis 14-27; 90-day read through the Bible - Day Two
" The Angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness..." Hagar is in the process of running away from Sarai. Hagar becomes the bane of Sarai's existence by no fault of her own. After being asked by the "Angel" where she was going, she acknowledges she is fleeing.
Hagar may not have been a player in God's covenant with Abraham, but He also did not write her off. God does not write off people. The intimacy of the conversation takes place after the concern addressed in the verse, "The Angel of the Lord found her..." This is such a beautiful demonstration of God's love for people. Hagar was thrown away by Abraham and mistreated by Sarai, but God found her by a spring of water in the wilderness. The elaboration of those details on where he found her can offer us the certainty of God's concern for her. We can be assured of his concern for us, those we love, and all He created. He is a caring God.
Remember, he sent his Son while we were enemies, not while we were in harmony with him. Hagar had no one and nothing, and she did not know that God was concerned for her. He found her and directed her, "Return to your mistress and submit yourself to her authority." Even though that direction may rub some of us the wrong way, in the historical setting, it would foster the same intimate concern from God as his finding her in her place of wandering.
