Reading the story of Joseph this morning Genesis 39-41 and the iteration of his character in these passages is something to be emulated. Why did God allow Joseph to sit in prison for such a long time for a crime he did not commit? This is a relevant question. In conjunction with that is "why did Joseph continue to show complete trust and thrive in a life of honor of His God?"
Joseph had no idea of the answer to the first question. He would find out. He did, however, have control of the second question. He chose to walk away from sin with Potiphar's wife. He gave God credit when he interpreted the cupbearer and baker's dream. Though wrongfully accused, he decided to serve his time completely relying on God. He thought his innocence should be known, but that's different than a complaint. He decided to submit and allow God to fight his battle. He did not know God's goal for his life but trusted no matter the outcome, he would live godly.
Just think about the family he was born in. He had both righteous examples, and he saw ungodly behavior. He didn't follow the latter models. Even later, when an opportunity for vengeance was placed in front of him. And a chance for man's Justice to be handed out because of the unjust treatment he suffered, he would choose godliness. Why? He decided to see God in the purpose.
If I had to write an epitaph for Joseph, it would read - A man who had every human right to be bitter, seek revenge, and fight for his cause, CHOSE to keep his eyes on his God. He repeatedly decided that God was more significant than hate, revenge, and self-aggrandizing. Here rest a man who chose to live godly, an example of making every moment count eternally. Now in Christ is his gain.
